Proverbs 17:22 - A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
At times, life gets the best of us. We become angry, get frustrated, become depressed, overwhelmed, we feel left out or alone, wonder if anything we do matters, ask why we even try, and the list of negative thoughts is seemingly endless. When we get this way, it is not healthy for us. We eat too much, stop eating, or sit around and let things pile up. Science shows that having a “broken spirit” is not good for us physically. It also not good for us mentally. When we have a broken spirit we begin to think wrongly about people, life, circumstances, and the actions we should take to “Resolve” the problems we are facing. Suicide is prevalent today, we also see people shooting others, hurting others, and doing hurtful things, many times because of the broken spirit they have. Spiritually, it is not healthy to have a broken spirit. We begin to look at life through the eyes of this world, the carnal flesh, and our own pride or selfishness. This affects how we fellowship with our family, friends, church family, and especially God. A broken spirit is dangerous & toxic. The one who has a broken spirit needs medicine. What medicine do they need? A merry heart! When we see someone is broken in spirit, administer some medicine, spend time with them trying to encourage them, show them the goodness of God. When my spirit is broken, I need someone to come along side of me and help me see the goodness of God. It is difficult to see the goodness of God with a broken spirit. There is talk about the church being a hospital, but as Christians we carry the Great Physician, maybe WE are the hospitals. Maybe WE should take the Great Physician to others, not waiting until Sunday or Wednesday to bring the broken into the building. This week let’s be the hospital. Let’s encourage one another. Do you see a person broken in spirit, administer the medicine of a merry heart. Help them laugh. Help them see God and His grace and goodness.
