OGBC Cohort Weekly(ish) Update: 5/8/23

Scripture: Genesis 19:37-38 - And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. (38) And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Thought: We often will look at these two girls and begin to question why they acted in such a way. We have difficulty understanding their thought processes. Have we stopped to consider that these two girls were a result of a bad home life? Their own father was willing to give them over to a mob of men to do whatever they desired. (Genesis 19:1-11) Their mother was so attached to Sodom that she looked back longing for those who chose to stay behind and suffer the wrath of God. She longed for her lost family, yet she was in direct disobedience to God’s command. (Genesis 19:12-17,23-26). Lot is the only member of his family that is named in the Bible. The sins of his family fall on his shoulders, because of the God given position Lot held in the family. These two daughters were not taught well, this does not excuse their sin, but it does help us to understand that parents are of vital importance to the life decisions their children make. We teach our children that our choices have consequences. I’m afraid we don’t really understand the depth of the truth of this statement. Out of the sin of Lot, his wife, and his daughters, came the Moabites and the Ammonites. These two nations were enemies of God’s people that affected them for literally hundreds of years. When we read the Old Testament, we see the Ammonites or the Moabites always aligning against the children of Israel. What is the practical take away? Not only, be sure your sins will find you out, but that we will indeed reap what we have sown, after we have sown, and more than we have sown. May we live our lives in the light of God’s will and choices for us, so we, our families and those around us may experience the overflow of the blessings of God.
